Wines that I like

BevMo is having another five cent sale. Buy one bottle of wine at regualar price, and get the second for a nickle. What a deal. My favorite picks this time come from Challis Lane Winery. Both the Cabernet and the Chardonnay are highly rated and during this sale the price is $8.04 for two bottles. Hurray, this sale ends July 27, 2009

With all that is currently going on with the economy, it is time consider bargain wines. There are many quality wines that are available for under $12.00. These are not second rate wines that you drink because that is all the budget allows. These wines are consistently good.

  • Peachy Canyon Winery Incredible Red ($9) This wine has bright fruit, good acidity and an elegant finish
  • Charles Shaw California Shiraz ($2) Yes this is Two Buck Chuck! This wine is a dead ringer for quality Cotes du Rhone. No wine snobs allowed. Trader Joes
  • Guigal Du Rhone ($10) This is from Robert Parker and has a lot of dark fruit flavors and lots of alcohol.
  • Barefoot Cellars California Cabernet Sauvignon ($5) This is medium bodied with balanced tannins and blackberry flavors with a vanilla finish.
  • Parducci California Pinot Noir ($10) This wine smells like chocolate mint! It tastes like ripe berries and more chocolate.
  • Tamas Estates Zinfandel ($12) This is a primotivo style wine and is spicy and peppery.
  • Campo Viejo Rioja Crianza ($9) This is a blend of temparanillo, garnacha, and mazuelo in an old sylye wine with bright red fruit.
  • Pope Valley Winery Cabernet Sauvignon ($8) This is fruit forward that is full bodied.
  • Pirovano Montepulciano d’Abruzzo ($8) A good old fashioned Italian wine with a god balance of fruit and earth.
  • Casa Rey Malbec ($9) Big and powerful with good balance and can stand up to heavy dishes.
  • McMannis Family Vineyards Pinot Noir ($12) This wine has notes of chocolate and cherry.
  • La Vieele Ferme Rouge ($8) A rhone blend that is fruity with a savory herbal and chocolate aspect.

Vinturi Wine Aerator

I have discover how much better red wine taste when they are poured though a aerator. Try it and you will be a believer.

Brutocao Cellars

More from my tasting at Brutocao. Today I will review their merlots.

2004 Reserve Merlot 25th Vintage -This is an exceptional wine. For those of you that look down your nose at merlots of not being worthy, you need to try this wine. It is not your typically light drinking wine. It is complex and especially clean. This wine would be a great pairing with a prime ribeye.

2005 Merlot Bliss Vineyard - This wine has black cherry fruit flavors that share the palate with rich loamy earth, creamy oak and spice.

2005 Merlot Mistelle Bliss Vineyard

This is a sweet dessert wine that expodes with flavor on the palate. Soft chocolate and cherry flavors generate a rose blush. Try pairing this with dark chocolate.

I just got back from wine tasting at Brutocao. The tasting room is located in Hopland, CA.  I must say  that their red wines are some of the finest wines I have ever tasted. In the next few days I will review about each one I tasted.

2006 Dolcetto, Feliz Vineyard

This is a dry, medium bodied and brightly fruited wine.  It is made to be approachable early with flavors of red licorice and ripe plum.

2005 Quadriga, Hopland Ranches

This wine is a blend of four estate Italian varietals; 35% Sangiovese, 31% Primitivo, 18% Barbara, 16% Dolcetto.  It gets it’s name Quadriga from the four wheeled charriot in Roman times. This wine explodes in the mouth. Try it with Italian food. This wine has won several awards: Double Gold at Tasters Guild Internation, Gold at San Francisco Chronicle, and Gold at the California State Fair.

These wines can be ordered at : wineclub@pacific.net

Riesling is one of my favorite wines. It is a very versatile wine that pairs easily with a variety of food. On these warm summer evenings I like to have a glass out of the patio before dinner.

There is a common misconception that all Rieslings are sweet. Actually Riesling come in a variety of sweetness. If you don’t like sweet wines, try the dry Rieslings. Most of the dry varietes come for France, Australia, and New Zealand.
In Canada, most of the Rieslings are ice wine. These can be very sweet. If you like sweet wine, you should try some of these wines.

I stopped by their tasting room in Auburn and tried their wines. I especially enjoyed the 2005 Zinfandel, Petite Sarah, and the port.

Riesling

A crisp white wine that ranges from brightand refreshing, to sweet and rich. It typically has peach, apricot, apple, honey and/or mineral fl avors. A unique balance of acidity (tartness) and residual sugar (sweetness) helps Riesling span such a diverse range of flavors. A versatile food wine that pairs well with anything, especially spicy dishes.

Pacific Rim Riesling

A dry – not sweet – Riesling using a blend of German grapes from the famed Mosel region and Washington state grapes. With full bright citrus flavors and hints of jasmine and mineral, it has .7% residual sugar.

Mirassou Riesling

This slightly sweeter, or off-dry, Riesling from Monterey County has soft peach, apple and spice fl avors. It has residual sugar of 2%.

Jekel Riesling

This off-dry (slightly sweet) Monterey white has aromas of peach and orange blossom with lemon, apple and pineapple flavors. It has residual sugar of about 2%.

Columbia Crest Riesling

This Washington wine offers baked pear and peach aromas with fl avors the winemaker describes as “fruit salad.” It has residual sugar of about 2.5%
